Josephine L. Tootie Bufano DePietro (1919-2006) served in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II. DePietro was born on 12 April 1919 in New York, to Andrew and Lillian Bufano. After graduating from Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady, New York in 1938, she began nursing school at the Schenectady Hospital Association's Training School for Nurses (now known as the Ellis Hospital School of Nursing), graduating in 1941. By 1944, she had enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, and was first stationed at the Thomas H. England General Hospital in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
